Pay-Per-Click (PPC)
Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
The two primary providers of PPC services are Overture and Google Adwords. PPC ads are the "Sponsored links" you see at the very top and the right in SE returns. Advertisers "bid" on keywords and only pay for click-throughs from their ads. It is a very effective way to get placement on SEs.
Our experience is that most Web users will first clink on the un-sponsored ("organic") links but, if you've done all you can to optimize your site and you're still not getting in the first page or two, then a Search Engine Marketing (SEM) campaign is an effective way to address this. Where your sponsored link appears in the hierarchy depends on how much you bid and your click-through rate (CTR). So if your ad is effective and results in a high CTR and you're the high bidder, you'll be at the top.
Google Adwords
Google runs a program that places paid listings on its own web site, as well as on some other sites that carry its results, such as AOL, Netscape, Ask Jeeves, Teoma and Earthlink.
Yahoo! Search Marketing
Formerly Overture, YSM's sponsored links appear in major search engines, including MSN, Yahoo!, Netscape and others. Minimum bid is 10 cents. All changes to ads must first be approved by YSM.
We recommend that client's first use Google Adwords because:
- rather than a minimum bid, you specify a maximum bid for each keyword and you are never charged more than a penny more than the next bidder.
- changes to ads take place in minutes, rather than having to be approved. Thus you can "massage" your message in real time and see the results
Once you've gotten your ad message down, then you might consider adding a Yahoo! Search Marketing campaign, as well.
HyperArts can consult with a client to determine the best PPC approach. The pricing depends on the extent of the campaigns. We can also train an internal person to conduct the campaign, since optimally PPC campaigns require daily attention and tweaking.
