Opening night celebration of Intersections: Reading the Space![]() CJM Board Chair Roselyne Swig, Irene Barberis, Jane Logemann, and Chris Bratton, President of the San Francisco Art Institute. Museum Members and friends celebrated the opening of Intersections on Thursday, October 20th. Those in attendance including guests from the German Consulate, International Museum of Women, Persian Center and Interfaith Center at the Presidio mingled with creator of the exhibition, artist Irene Barberis, and participating artist Jane Logemann while taking in the provocative works on display. The evening marked the U.S. debut of Intersections, which originated at the Jewish Museum Australia. ![]() Jane Logemann discusses Whether you are a first time or returning visitor, we invite you to see the more than 30 works on display by artists Irene Barberis, Jane Logemann and Parastou Forouhar in Intersections: Reading the Space. Not to be missed is the artist's collaborative endeavor The Joint Work, which evolved over the course of one year as a length of cloth made three trips around the world to the studios of the individual artists. With no rules or limits, each woman worked on the cloth in turn, negotiating individual and cultural differences. Intersections is currently on view through February 26, 2006. Special Member discount to Brundibár at Berkeley Rep![]() Brundibár Maurice Sendak 2003 CJM Member discount is available online only!Berkeley Rep is proud to present the opera Brundibar, a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between two artistic giants: Tony Kushner and Maurice Sendak. An allegory of innocence triumphing over evil, Brundibár was originally composed in the ominous years leading up to World War II and was performed by children imprisoned at Terezin, the Nazi's notorious "model ghetto." In 2003, Kushner and Sendak published a picture-book version of this classic tale; now audiences can enjoy it live! Brundibár will be presented alongside the pair's adaptation of Comedy on the Bridge, an absurd commentary on war also written in Czechoslovakia in the thirties. According to Kushner, "Both shows are a testament to the creative power of human beings, even in dark times, to turn ugliness into music." They will be directed by his longtime collaborator, Artistic Director Tony Taccone, and performed by a multigenerational cast that includes local school children singing the show's moral: "Let us be brave, and make bullies behave!" Members of The Contemporary Jewish Museum receive $10 off each ticket on select performances November 11th - 30th (discount not available opening night, November 16th).
